September opening slated for Unity school
UNITY — Construction of the new Unity Elementary School is on track to be completed at the end of August, with the school opening in early September.
"We're making progress on all fronts," said Ron Bauer, executive vice president of Trumbull-Nelson, the Lebanon-based construction company in charge of the school project.
The school is expected to open Sept. 2, both Bauer and Unity School Board Chairman Craig Shute said Monday.
"If everything works well the school should be open by then. It does look good," said Shute.
Bauer added that the school will most likely be completed a week prior to Sept. 2, but school staff will need that week to move in furniture and set up their classrooms.
Shute updated the New Hampshire State Board of Education on the school's progress at its April 24 meeting, noting that board members were pleased to hear the opening date has been set.
"It went pretty good," Shute recalled of the meeting. "They're glad they got a positive report."
The construction, as of Monday, Bauer said is "tracking very nicely." A majority of the dry wall is now up, framing changes have been completed and installation of windows should be done at the end of this week.
With the snow now melted away, Bauer added that the construction crew was able to determine that the winter weather didn't take a big toll on the building.
"There was minimal freezing damage which is great news," he said.
The next meeting of the Unity School Board is Tuesday, May 13, which will feature a presentation by members of Unity's eighth grade class on their upcoming class trip. Representatives of the board are required to attend monthly meetings of the New Hampshire State Board of Education to give an update on the construction project.
Upcoming state board meetings are set for May 13, June 12 and July 24.
